Tenmat Intumescent Fire Blocks were the chosen to meet stringent NYC fireblocking requirements in Midtown’s new development, New Providence.
Originally known as a seven-story city shelter, 225 E 45th Street is now supporting a new face. With being demolished in 2024, 225 E 45th Street will become the future home of New Providence. New Providence will house 131 units of affordable/supportive housing, 170 shelter beds for a women’s shelter, along with an upgraded primary care clinic.
Designed with an ACM and brick cladding system, the 21-story new development triggered one of the most stringent fireblocking requirements in New York – Section 718.2.6 Architectural Trim of the 2022 NYC Building Code Adoption. With this adoption, it requires a façade application with combustible components, such as the design of New Providence, to integrate fireblocking into the exterior wall assembly.
Dedicated to ensuring proper life safety standards, Tenmat’s NYC OTCR/DOB Approved Intumescent Fireblocking was selected for this application. With its NYC OTCR/DOB approval in accordance with Section 718.2.1, Tenmat’s Intumescent Fireblocking allows peace of mind for New Providence’s selected architects and developers – however, this is not the only key advantage of specifying Tenmat Intumescent Fireblocking into a NYC cladding system.
In normal conditions, the Tenmat’s Intumescent Fireblocking allows for a maximum 2” air gap within the façade assembly. With this gap, the air cavity will promote proper air circulation and moisture management – the key benefits of integrating a ventilated air cavity. When exposed to extremely high temperatures, the intumescent components within Tenmat’s Intumescent Fire Blocks will be activated. Once activated, the materials will expand rapidly – compartmentalizing the fire.
To ensure New Providence’s cladding system and Tenmat’s FF102/50 Intumescent Fire Block meet NYC standards, this system underwent an NFPA 285 test. The results of this test were successful. If you are interested in learning more about these test results, contact Tenmat USA.
